I want to build an outdoor fireplace with stone. How do I close in the part where the chimney is?

Yes I mean the firebox throat

Are you asking how to build the firebox throat?

The throat is the part of the firebox that eventually becomes the chimney. Is this what you are talking about?

>>>added: well in that case I suggest purchasing a book or getting one from the library. This is very complex and crucial to the function of the fire place. Not done properly it will never burn right. I don't mean to put you off but explaining this in this type of setting would be like walking you through brain surgery via e-mail its just too many steps (ok maybe not brain surgery) but you get the idea. This is why all new houses (except high end custom) have prefab fireplaces installed. it is a difficult process. get the book and take your time. good luck

Put a piece of angle iron across and use the angle iron to support your firebricks, then put stones on top of your firebricks.

Just buy a chimney cap. You can probably find them at most hardware, home improvement stores.
Apart from that, I am sure you can find outdoor fireplace designs online.

Can't you but an insert to then cement the stones around it? Made of cast iron or fire clay? It may be the easy way out, but it's what I'd do.

Hire a mason who is experienced in building outdoor fireplaces. If you build it wrong it wont draw and you'll have to start over.
