I want to make my pokey fireplace larger. How can I do this? As a girl with not much experience of diy need some easy to follow expert advice, even if that is to get an expert in! thanks.
You would be better off leaving this little project to a mason experienced in building fireplaces. Without looking at what you currently have & what you want, it's a bit hard to give you credible advice.
Good luck…

Fireplaces/chambers have to built using fire brick and fire clay cement, couldn't recommend for a diy virgin, besides which, changing the size may alter the efficiency of the chimney, they need to be a certain size for the room/chimney to be able to 'draw' properly,if you get it wrong it wont draw enough air to burn,or will blow smoke back into the room.Check with you local solid fuel advisory centre or stone mason.

Right,Pusskins. Pin-um-back.Go to fire surround shop and measure the aperture of the thing you want, or size you require. When doing this you will need to break out the old fire back with a lump hammer. You can get a split-back to replace the old one. If you were to go for …say a dog grate and sit it as far back in the hearth as you can and light a smoke bomb (supplied at merchants too) in the grate, if the smoke comes out at you before it goes up then you need to elevate the grate. This can be done with the aid of a paving slab. When you fit the split back fill over the top with weak concrete mix and this will keep it in place. If you decide to be a bricklayer then bring the side walls up to the same as the shop measurements and using 8mm x 75mm mild steel flat bar spring your arch over and complete with a nice chunky timber. Ka-ching!! New big fire. Jeff

You can enjoy your pokey fireplace and then also buy an indoor/outdoor fireplace table here: http://www.yardenvy.com/outdoor-fire-pit.asp You can use anywhere you want so you can increase your fire warmth indoors, or hang out outside when you have friends and family visit. Also doubles as a coffee table when you put the top on. I just got mine as a gift for Christmas for my husband, so I recommend it first hand. It'll save you the need to spend money, too - only $640 with free shipping, as opposed to what you'll pay increasing the size of your fireplace.
